Air quality monitoring system will be strengthened in Delhi-NCR, now it will be monitored like this

New Delhi. The Central Air Quality Management Commission (CAQM) has emphasized on further increase in monitoring centers to monitor pollution in Delhi-NCR. In order to improve the air quality, especially in the capital, the network of monitoring centers will be further strengthened. At present, there are 146 monitoring centers in Delhi-NCR to measure air quality. If we talk about Delhi, then the number of air quality monitoring centers here is fine, but its quality needs to be increased. Along with this, the commission has emphasized on establishing two to three monitoring mechanisms in the districts of the states adjoining Delhi.

Let us tell you that from September to December, the air quality in Delhi-NCR gets very bad. Keeping this in mind, NDMC will now prepare a special action plan. This action plan will be prepared on the guidelines of IIT Delhi. In this action plan, special efforts will be made for the prevention of vehicular pollution in Lutyens’ Delhi area. A big decision has been taken in the meeting of the NDMC Council on Wednesday.

Air quality monitoring mechanism to be strengthened
There are 146 monitoring centers in Delhi-NCR region. It has 65 manual and 81 real time centers. In this, 50 monitoring centers are in Delhi alone. There are 11 centers in Gurugram, 8 in Ghaziabad, 12 in Gautam Budh Nagar, 5 in Faridabad and 4 in Baghpat. Along with this, there are three centers each in Jhajjar, Sonipat, Rohtak adjacent to Delhi. There are one center each in Bulandshahr, Bhiwani, Bhapatpur, Charkhi Dadri, Mewat and Palwal districts.

What has the commission recommended
The commission says that most of the monitoring centers are in urban areas, so it becomes difficult to get complete information. In such a situation, now there is a need to increase the network of air quality monitoring in the entire region. Although, the commission believes that there are sufficient number of monitoring centers in Delhi, but now their quality needs to be increased at these centers. This will make it easier than ever to predict air quality.

The Commission is of the view that keeping in view the prevailing air quality in Delhi-NCR, there is a need to control various areas which contribute significantly to air pollution. Various studies have shown that construction and demolition activities are major contributors to air pollution in NCR. The decision will be reviewed from time to time based on air quality forecast and significant improvement in air quality.
