Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 Trophy Unveiled: World’s Best Chess Stars Shine in Bengaluru

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) Season 4 has officially unveiled its trophy in Bengaluru, and the excitement is already soaring. This prestigious event, jointly organised by Tech Mahindra and FIDE, has quickly become one of the most important team competitions in the world chess calendar.

For the second consecutive year, India is hosting the league, and fans are thrilled to see the return of legendary names. The nine‑day tournament will feature six powerful teams battling in a double round‑robin format, with the top two advancing to the Grand Finale on 13 September 2026.

Magnus Carlsen Returns to India

The biggest headline of Season 4 is the return of world number one Magnus Carlsen. After missing last year’s edition in Mumbai, Carlsen is back to strengthen the Alpine APL Pipers, the defending champions. He admitted that his earlier seasons with the team were frustrating, but now he is determined to help them retain the title.

The Pipers have built a formidable squad. Alongside Carlsen, the team boasts India’s Women’s World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh, veteran Koneru Humpy, Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri, and India’s own Vidit Gujrathi. This mix of experience and youthful energy makes them one of the favourites.

Triveni Continental Kings Eye Third Title

Two‑time champions Triveni Continental Kings are aiming for a historic third crown in four years. Their icon player Alireza Firouzja leads the charge, supported by Wei Yi, former women’s world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Zhu Jiner. Kosteniuk expressed her excitement, saying the team is motivated to add another trophy to their collection.

Viswanathan Anand Joins Alaskan Knights

Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand, at 56, has switched teams this season. He now represents the PBG Alaskan Knights, who also feature rising stars like Arjun Erigaisi and Abhimanyu Mishra. Making his debut is 15‑year‑old Turkish prodigy Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus, who is thrilled to play alongside Anand and Erigaisi.

This young squad is expected to bring fresh energy and surprises to the league.

Other Teams and Icon Players

• CheQ Mumba Masters, led by Maxime Vachier‑Lagrave, are confident of finally converting their strong team spirit into results.
• Fyers American Gambits, captained by Javokhir Sindarov, will rely on his debut as an icon player to inspire the squad.
• Ganges Grandmasters, though missing Anand this season, remain competitive with their balanced lineup.

Innovations in Season 4

The organisers have promised that Season 4 will be bigger and better. Fans at the venue can enjoy commentary through personalised headsets, while those at home can interact via the official GCL app, testing their skills against Grandmasters.

For the first time, team coaches and captains will wear heart‑rate monitors, allowing spectators to see their stress levels during matches. Hindi commentary has also been introduced to make the broadcast more accessible to Indian audiences.

Why This Matters for Indian Chess

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League Season 4 in Bengaluru is more than just a tournament. It is a celebration of chess as a family sport, a festival that brings together legends like Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand with rising talents such as Divya Deshmukh and Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus.

By hosting the event in India, the league is inspiring a new generation of players and fans. With world‑class broadcasting, interactive apps, and innovations, GCL is redefining how audiences experience chess.
