Gavaskar made his Test debut in 1971 against the West Indies at Port of Spain. He scored half-centuries in both the innings of this match. It took him about 3 years to make a place in the ODI team. In 1974, he played his first ODI against England in Leeds.

Gavaskar was born on 10 July 1949 in Mumbai. Gavaskar has also mentioned this anecdote in his autobiography ‘Sunny Days’. On the birth of little Sunil, his uncle Narayan Masurkar reached the hospital. He picked up Sunil and saw that he had a ‘birthmark’ near his ear.

When he reached the hospital again the next day, he was shocked to find the child in his arms. The ‘birthmark’ of the child he had picked up did not show up. Narayan told this to the hospital administration and then little Sunil was searched for a long time. Later, a woman belonging to a fisherman’s family was seen sleeping near Sunil. Perhaps due to the mistake of the nurse, the children had changed, but the hospital administration rectified it and the little Sunil was again handed over to his family.

Talking about Gavaskar’s cricket career, he scored a total of 10122 runs in 125 Test matches with 34 centuries and 45 half-centuries. Apart from this, he scored a total of 3092 runs in 108 ODIs, scoring 1 century and 27 half-centuries. He scored 25834 runs in his first class career which included 81 centuries.
