Menstrual Hygiene Day: Awareness about periods has increased among women

1 of 1

New Delhi . Undoubtedly, as awareness of periods has increased in urban areas, women have opted for sanitary pads instead of cloth ones. R. Filmmakers like Balki (who made ‘Pad Man’) have also changed these perceptions to a great extent.

Thousands of women and girls are stigmatized, isolated and discriminated against just because of menstruation. According to a survey, taboos such as not allowing to touch pickles, not working, entering the kitchen or touching common food items or utensils and many more are such taboos.

Even today, in the year 2022, women are instructed to isolate themselves during their periods instead of considering themselves as normal.

There is a need to raise awareness for proper period hygiene

It is important to raise awareness about menstruation and its related topics so that it is seen as ‘normal’, not something to be ashamed of or hidden.

To overcome these problems, proper education and awareness should be provided to the girls to help them be emotionally and physically ready.

Frequent use of dirty clothes for periods can lead to infection in the reproductive system. Such as bacterial vaginosis or urinary tract infection (UTI), which can turn into a pelvic infection.

Since these infections can spread to the pelvis, they can make it difficult to conceive or even cause pregnancy issues such as preterm labor.

Poor local hygiene is one of the risk factors for cervical cancer, poor sanitation can increase the risk of cervical cancer in the long run.

It is important that the use of sanitary pads over cloth begins in elementary school. In rural areas, girls should be given sanitary pads to use instead of clothes and encourage them.

Lack of access to high quality hygiene products is a major obstacle in reaching 100% menstrual hygiene coverage in India.
