New Delhi. Ireland legend William Porterfield has retired from international cricket. His retirement has come right at the time when Ireland have to play T20 series against India. The international career of 37-year-old William Porterfield was of 16 years. He played more than 200 matches for Ireland during this period. He was also Ireland’s most successful captain. Porterfield is the second highest run-scorer for Ireland in ODIs. Only Kevin O’Brien has scored more runs than him. Ireland have to play T20 matches against India on 26 and 28 June.
William Porterfield has not only been a witness to the passing of Irish cricket from the floor, but has also played an important role in it. Porterfield was a young member of the team when Ireland defeated Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup. But four years later, when Ireland exploded again in the World Cup, the command of the team was in the hands of Porterfield. Ireland defeated England in the 2011 World Cup under his captaincy.
Ireland’s impressive performance continued in the next World Cup and other major tournaments as well. Due to this, the ICC also gave him the status of Test cricket team. Ireland played the first test match in 2018. When the Irish team landed in its first Test match, the captaincy of the team was in the hands of Porterfield.

William Porterfield has retired just ahead of the India-Ireland T20 series. Porterfield played 212 international matches and captained 172 of them. Porterfield played the maximum 148 ODI matches. He has also played 61 T20 matches and 3 Test matches.

William Porterfield scored 4343 runs in 148 ODIs. These include 11 centuries. He has also scored 1079 runs in 61 T20 matches. Ireland is the newest team in the Test format. Porterfield could play only 3 Test matches due to this.
