Thane. A Thane court on Thursday granted bail to Marathi television actress Ketki Chitale in the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act case registered against her in 2020. However, he will not be immediately released from Thane Central Jail as he has several other cases against him, including those for making objectionable remarks against Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar.
Chitale was arrested on May 20, following a case registered by the Rabale police station for posting derogatory statements on Buddhism under the SC/SC (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in 2020.
Meanwhile, the actress filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court challenging her arrest on May 14 for allegedly forwarding an objectionable poem on Pawar, following which the political stir intensified.
In the petition filed through his lawyer Yogesh Deshpande, Chitale claimed that his arrest was not in accordance with law and hence, it should be quashed.
She said that instead of giving her notice first under the provisions of CrPC, Thane police called her and asked her to report at the police station, which she complied with and the Kalwa police team present there took her into custody.
Chitale, 29, further argued that he had only shared a poem on Pawar written by someone else, which did not name the NCP chief.
She is currently facing around two dozen FIRs on Pawar based on her social media posts and has earlier approached the High Court seeking a stay on police action against her. The petition is still pending.
