New York . A team of American researchers has developed a glucose meter-based test that will detect antibodies produced against Kovid-19 in our body. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University, MIT and Harvard University said that being infected with Kovid-19 is known by over-the-counter tests, but if a person’s test result is positive, then this test cannot be done at home. How long are antibodies active in the body?
This is because the COVID vaccine may protect against future infections for some time, but it is not clear how long this protection will last.
The level of antibodies in a person’s body shows how protected he is from infection, but to find out, an enzyme related immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test has to be done. This test requires expensive equipment and specialized technicians.
The report, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, suggests that new readily available glucose meters could be used for this.
The researchers designed a new fusion protein, which contains both invertase and mouse antibodies and that binds to human immunoglobulin (IgG) antibodies. They showed that the fusion protein binds to human IgG and successfully produces glucose from sucrose.
The team then made test strips with the SARS-Covid-2 spike protein on them. Antibodies attach to the spike protein when it is immersed in samples from patients infected with Kovid-19.
Addition of the invertase/IgG fusion protein and then sucrose will produce glucose, which can be detected by a glucose meter.
The researchers said that this method can also be adapted to test for SARS-Covid-2 variants and other infectious diseases.
