After playing for Wellington for most of his first-class career, Davies eventually realized that he needed a change in the environment to return to his true form. He said, “There was a lot in that, just keeping his personal life separate. He was alone I was suppressing him, I was not leading a gay life.” Davis said that his life improved when he moved out of his native Wellington to play domestic cricket in Auckland in 1997.

Heath said, “I was a little scared to be out in Wellington… I was forced to hide it. I felt there was this part of my life that I needed to express, I was very upset about hiding it. Everyone in the team in Auckland knew I was gay, but it didn’t seem like such a big issue I just felt free.”

Former England wicketkeeper Steven Davis became the first male international cricketer to publicly come out as gay in early 2011.
