Ladakh Shines Brightly as Khelo India Winter Games 2026 Begin

In the heart of Leh, surrounded by breathtaking icy landscapes, the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) 2026 kicked off on a chilly Tuesday morning. This vibrant event has solidified Ladakh’s position as one of India’s top winter sports destinations. The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, proudly announced that hosting the KIWG for the third consecutive year reflects the nation’s belief in the region’s ability to organize major sporting events, even in the toughest high-altitude conditions.

Gupta emphasized the significance of these games, stating they serve as a powerful catalyst for promoting winter sports, nurturing young talent, and enhancing the overall sporting culture in the area. The opening ceremony, held at the iconic NDS Stadium, was a lively affair. As the first ice hockey matches commenced at both the NDS complex and the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre, the air was thick with excitement. This year, nineteen teams from various states, Union Territories, and organizations like the Army and ITBP are competing. With 1,060 participants, including many athletes, the Ladakh leg of these games marks the sixth edition of this national winter sports standout, wrapping up on Republic Day, January 26. A second phase is scheduled for Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, in February.

Inside the NDS Stadium, which can hold 5,000 spectators, the atmosphere was electric. Despite the frigid temperatures, the spirit of adventure sports was alive and kicking. Gupta, while officially opening the games at the state-of-the-art Ice Hockey Stadium, celebrated this milestone in Ladakh’s journey toward becoming India’s winter sports hub. This year’s KIWG boasts competitions in Ice Hockey, Speed Skating, and, for the first time, Figure Skating. Gupta shared that this addition marks an exciting evolution for winter sports in India, with plans underway to introduce more sports like Curling in the future.

Gupta also highlighted the importance of world-class facilities in elevating the standards of sports in the region. The venues like the NDS Ice Hockey Rink, Gupuk Pond, and the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Rink have been meticulously prepared for the games. The NDS Ice Hockey Rink, built at a cost of ₹53.58 crore, is a significant accomplishment for Ladakh. Furthermore, construction of a similar rink in Kargil is progressing rapidly, opening doors for year-round training that was previously restricted to just a few months of winter.

The new Sports Policy launched in Ladakh aims to elevate the Union Territory as a winter sports powerhouse. The policy includes initiatives like talent identification in schools, special provisions for women and differently-abled athletes, job reservations for outstanding sportspersons, scholarships, cash awards of up to ₹100 crore, advanced training facilities, incentives for coaches, and a focus on integrating sports with education and tourism. This transformative framework is designed to provide structured pathways for young individuals to pursue sports professionally.

Gupta pointed to the growing relationship between sports and tourism in Ladakh, citing successful past events such as the Climate Cup Football Tournament, the Ladakh Marathon, and previous editions of the KIWG. These events not only create employment opportunities but also elevate Ladakh’s global profile, inspiring young athletes to engage in winter sports.

He acknowledged the broader national context of sports development, attributing it to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gupta remarked that the Khelo India initiative emphasizes youth empowerment, fitness, and sporting excellence as national priorities. The inclusion of winter sports in this framework, along with hosting international-level events in remote regions like Ladakh, reflects the Prime Minister’s forward-thinking vision.

Offering gratitude to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, as well as the Sports Authority of India, Gupta expressed appreciation for their trust and ongoing support. He thanked the Ladakh Administration, armed forces, volunteers, and all involved parties for their dedication in organizing the games.

The Chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (Kargil), Dr. Muhammad Jaffer Akhoon, acknowledged the Government of India and the Union Territory Administration for providing a national platform for Ladakhi youth. He expressed hope for the upcoming ice hockey stadium in Kargil.

Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra praised Ladakh’s hospitality despite the harsh winter weather and congratulated the people for successfully hosting the games for the third year running. He envisioned that local players, who are already the backbone of India’s national ice hockey teams, would qualify for the Winter Olympics.

The opening ceremony was a colorful celebration, featuring a parade of the participating teams, stirring performances by the Ladakh Scouts’ Pipe Band, and energetic dances by local youth. The event also showcased a video about the KIWG, followed by an exciting ice hockey match between the UT Ladakh and the Army, and demonstrations by local ice skaters.

As the Khelo India Winter Games 2026 continues, it promises to inspire countless young athletes and strengthen Ladakh’s growing reputation as a winter sports destination.
