Tarun’s Pet Dilemma: A Wish for a Furry Friend
Tarun gazed at his pet lizard, whom he affectionately named Silent Sunny. Of course, lizards can’t actually smile, no matter how happy they are after munching on a juicy housefly. But in Tarun’s eyes, Silent Sunny was special — even if the lizard didn’t know its name or if it was even the same one from last week. Lizards spend most of their days lying flat against the wall, soaking up the warmth from the tube light in his room, while Tarun could only smile at him.
Now, let’s learn a little more about our young friend Tarun. He was an energetic eight-year-old boy who had a big dream: to own a pet of his own. But why was this so important to him? The answer lies in his best friend, Joey.
Joey and Tarun were like two peas in a pod. They were the same height, checked similar marks in school, and even boasted of the same cuts and bruises from their little adventures. They often shared everything, from lunchboxes to video game scores. They even lost their front teeth together in a funny incident during a football game; both boys ended up crashing into each other and had matching gaps in their grinning smiles.
A New Beginning
One day, everything changed when Joey’s father brought home a puppy that needed a loving family. Tarun was stunned. How could anyone leave such a cute little pet behind? His mind raced with thoughts — now Joey had a pet, and Tarun didn’t. The competition was suddenly lopsided. Every day after school, Joey rushed home to play with his puppy, take it for walks, and show it off to friends. Meanwhile, Tarun just sat at home, dreaming of the day he too could own a pet.
Desperate to join in the fun, Tarun came up with a brilliant plan. “Joey, what if we share your puppy?” he asked hopefully. After all, they shared almost everything else! But to Tarun’s shock, Joey flatly refused. “No way! We can’t chop my puppy down the middle,” Joey exclaimed, sounding quite serious about it.
To make things worse, another friend named Nimisha overheard their conversation and ran home crying, insisting that Tarun wanted to harm Joey’s puppy. This spiraled into a big mess, with children calling each other names while parents scrambled to understand what was going on. No matter how many times Tarun tried to explain that he loved the puppy and wouldn’t harm it, his words fell on deaf ears. Joey was furious and promised never to let Tarun anywhere near his newfound pet — forever!
Realizing he needed to level the playing field, Tarun decided he had to get his own pet. He started pleading with his parents, crawling on all fours and begging, “Please, I want a pet so badly!” He promised to be the best pet owner ever. He would study all day, eat his vegetables without complaint, and never tell a single lie again.
But Tarun’s hopes were crushed one by one. His mother shook her head and said she would have to feed it. His father insisted he would be the one to clean up after it. Even his grandmother piped up that she was allergic to pets! Tarun was frustrated, questioning how someone could be allergic to every animal under the sun. “Then you must be allergic to humans too!” he shouted as he stormed off, feeling defeated.
The Search Begins
That’s when Tarun hatched a new plan. He realized he didn’t just want to share in Joey’s fun; he truly wanted a pet to call his own — something to love, care for, and share life’s adventures with. So, he looked at Silent Sunny again, standing proudly (well, sort of) on the chair. “You know what? You could be my little pet,” he said with determination. “Mummy won’t have to worry about feeding you, Papa won’t have to bathe you, and Daadi can’t be allergic to you because look, you’re right here with no sneezes!”
Excited, Tarun rushed to his computer, which, to be honest, was meant for studying but he just couldn’t resist. He began researching everything he could about lizards. “You’re part of the Gekkonidae family now,” he proclaimed. “From now on, your name is Silent Sunny Gekkonidae!” To his dismay, Silent Sunny didn’t seem very impressed.
“You look a bit like a baby crocodile!” Tarun continued in an attempt to bond. He imagined how cool it would be to introduce Silent Sunny to his friends, especially Joey, who might just be a little jealous.
The more Tarun read, the more daunting the idea seemed. Silent Sunny hunted at night, meaning they would have very little time to play together. And fetching a ball? Well, that was probably out of the question. But Tarun decided he would figure it out. The school holidays were just around the corner, promising him plenty of time to train his lizard — could this be his ticket to fame, perhaps even a TV appearance about his unusual pet?
With newfound excitement, he dreamed of applause and admiration. Suddenly, having Silent Sunny wasn’t just about keeping up with Joey; it was about sharing joy and love with his own special creature. Tarun’s heart fluttered with excitement as he imagined all the adventures yet to come.
As he watched Silent Sunny bask under the light, Tarun knew deep down that this was just the beginning of an incredible journey.
