Jason Shokalook: The Rising Star on His Journey to the MLS Golden Boot
Jason Shokalook is one of the shining talents in American soccer today. With a journey marked by hard work and dedication, he has come from humble beginnings to become a star in MLS Next Pro, and his sights are now set on making a significant impact in the Major League Soccer (MLS).
Born on September 30, 2002, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Jason’s life has always been about balancing education and sports. To pursue his dream of becoming a professional soccer player, he would often get picked up right after school. On Mondays and Wednesdays, he would travel a long five-hour round trip to Pittsburgh for hockey, and on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, he would make the four-hour journey to Cleveland to play soccer. “I would get picked up right after school and drive to Pittsburgh on Mondays and Wednesdays and then to Cleveland on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays,” he shares.
The Commitment to Soccer
Traveling that much as a child wasn’t easy. Jason explains, “There’s a tough part about that because when you make that sacrifice, you’re not only missing out on your childhood. Sitting in that car is not an easy thing.” But despite the challenges, he never complained. “My mom can back me on this—I just got in that car, took a nap, went to practice, and did it,” he says, reflecting on his commitment.
At a young age, he realized that he wanted to fully commit to soccer. After sixth grade, he decided to focus entirely on the sport. This decision was pivotal, as it set the stage for his development as an athlete. “From sixth grade until I was 18, I was constantly driving from Erie to Cleveland,” he recalls.
Achievements and Growth
After moving on from high school, Jason enrolled at the University of Dayton, where he balanced his studies with soccer. His college journey was remarkable. In 2022, he scored nine goals in 18 games, which caught the eyes of scouts. He then had an even bigger senior year, netting 14 goals and providing five assists in just 17 matches. His stellar performances made him one of the top forwards in collegiate soccer, ultimately leading to his selection by the Chicago Fire with the 35th pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft.
With the Chicago Fire, Jason initially played a supporting role, learning from other team members, including MLS Next Pro Golden Boot winner David Poreba. In his first season, he managed to score three goals and contribute three assists over 27 appearances. However, the year 2025 was when he truly burst onto the scene, scoring an impressive league-high of 20 goals and adding two more in the playoffs.
Setting Standards and Achieving Goals
When asked about his significant progress from scoring just three goals to achieving 22, Jason emphasizes the importance of goal-setting. “I set my goals at the beginning of the season and took them seriously. Winning the Golden Boot in MLS Next Pro was a significant goal for me,” he explains. He dedicated himself to improving. “I was putting in extra work in the gym, focused on better finishing, and even swimming and reading about the psychology of the game,” he says.
Jason’s first-team debut was on June 7 in a match against DC United, where he assisted on the last goal during a dominant 7-1 victory. In December, he signed a professional contract with the Chicago Fire through 2026, with options for 2027 and 2028. “I’m super excited for the opportunity,” he remarks, feeling the responsibility to prove himself worthy of the first team.
Looking ahead, Jason hopes to contribute significantly to the Chicago Fire as they seek their first trophy in two decades. He has proven that with hard work and determination, it’s possible to rise from humble beginnings to the professional ranks.
As he continues his journey, Jason Shokalook is definitely a name to watch in the MLS, and fans everywhere will be cheering him on as he aims for even greater achievements.
