If you love cheese but worry about its health effects, here’s some good news for you! Recent research reveals that enjoying high-fat cheese might actually help keep your mind sharp as you age. A study conducted among Swedish residents shows that those who regularly consumed high-fat cheese were less likely to develop dementia over two decades compared to those who didn’t. While these findings aren’t a guarantee that cheese can prevent dementia, they do suggest that indulging in cheese doesn’t have to come with major health concerns.

Emily Sonestedt, a nutrition scientist at Lund University, notes that cheese—even those high in fat—can be part of a balanced diet. She states, “In reasonable amounts, high-fat cheese does not seem to harm brain health and may be linked to a slightly lower risk of dementia.”

The Study Behind the Findings

Understanding the health benefits of food like cheese can be tricky. Conducting controlled studies on food is far more complex than testing new drugs. Observational studies can have their flaws as well.

Sonestedt explains that earlier studies from countries such as Japan and the UK hinted at a link between cheese consumption and lower dementia risk. However, those studies often had smaller sample sizes or shorter follow-ups. In contrast, the current research included nearly 28,000 adults over 25 years, with detailed dietary tracking and clear diagnoses of dementia.

The data came from Lund University’s Malmö Diet and Cancer study, which started in the 1990s to monitor the health of middle-aged residents in Malmö. Participants were asked to record their usual diet, including the type and amount of cheese they consumed. High-fat cheese was defined as any cheese containing more than 20% fat—think cheddar, Gouda, and blue cheese.

The Results Tell a Promising Story

Throughout the study, about 3,200 participants were diagnosed with dementia. Interestingly, those who enjoyed at least 50 grams of high-fat cheese daily had a modest but notable decrease in dementia risk. To put that into perspective, 50 grams is roughly equivalent to two slices of cheese or about one-third of a cup of shredded cheese.

In the study, around 10% of cheese lovers developed dementia compared to 13% of those who consumed 15 grams or less of cheese per day. After adjusting for other factors such as age and general dietary quality, the researchers found that high-fat cheese was associated with a 13% lower risk of dementia and a 29% lower risk of vascular dementia, which is the second most common form of dementia. They also observed similar benefits for those who frequently consumed high-fat cream.

What Does This Mean for You?

While this study provides valuable insights, it’s essential to keep in mind that observational studies have their limitations. This particular research measured participants’ diets only once. This means that some individuals might have changed their cheese consumption as they aged. Moreover, the study focused exclusively on Swedish residents, whose healthcare practices and dietary habits can differ significantly from those in countries like India or the USA.

There is ongoing debate among scientists about the overall impact of high-fat foods like cheese on brain health. Some diets, like the MIND diet, suggest limiting cheese intake. However, these recent findings suggest you don’t need to completely eliminate cheese from your diet for the sake of your brain health.
