Malappuram’s Sports Meet Shift: What It Means for Young Athletes

In the scenic district of Malappuram, sports play a vital role in shaping the lives of many young athletes. In fact, last year’s state school sports champions hailed from this very district. But, there’s a worrying situation brewing. Due to the absence of a proper synthetic track in Malappuram, the district school sports meet has been shifted to Palakkad, leaving many local athletes disappointed.

A Shift to Palakkad

The District School Sports Meet will take place from 17th to 19th at the Chathanur GHSS in Palakkad. Interestingly, this is the first time that the Malappuram District School Sports Meet is being held in another district. The usual venue for athletic events has been the Calicut University Stadium, renowned for its synthetic track. However, after years of wear and tear, that track has fallen into disrepair, prompting the education department to seek alternative locations.

Efforts to repair the Calicut University’s track have been ongoing, but despite months of requests for tenders, no action has taken place. Because of this, the sports department declared the track unfit for competitions and denied permission for the event to be held there.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Currently, there are very few options in the vicinity. The Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Tirur and the Manavedan School in Nilambur also have 400-meter tracks, but neither is in suitable condition for hosting competitions. The embarrassing situation leaves Malappuram, which has the highest number of students in the state, without a proper venue for its own sports meet.

What’s most troubling is that Malappuram is set to participate in the state school sports meet scheduled from 21st to 28th in Thiruvananthapuram. Yet, with no track available, their chances of defending their title from last year seem bleak.

A Call for Better Facilities

It raises an important question: what is needed for Malappuram? The very evident answer is a proper 400-meter synthetic track. Over the past decade, the district’s track events have been held at Calicut University, which provided much-needed facilities during a time when the athletes were only training on muddy fields. The introduction of a synthetic track was akin to receiving a gift, helping many young athletes shine, contributing to Malappuram’s recent success.

However, the situation has now changed drastically. The once well-maintained track now has cracks and potholes. Dealing with a lack of a viable alternative track is not only frustrating but potentially dangerous for the competing young athletes. The realization hit the education department only when they started searching for alternative venues amid the preparation for the district sports meet.

A Future to Consider

As things stand, Calicut’s track might get repaired by next year, but if the district does not invest in a second track, it may continue to rely on neighboring districts for future events. There’s a definite concern about what may happen in the coming years if Malappuram doesn’t take action.

The decision to conduct the meet in Palakkad was made at a meeting of the welcome committee. The District Educational Officer (DEO), P.V. Rafeeq, shared how the need to move the sports meet was essential after checking the condition of the tracks in Tirur and Nilambur. He emphasized that running on poorly maintained tracks could lead to injuries, which would reflect poorly on the district.

A Local’s Perspective

The proximity of the new location in Palakkad to schools like Ideal Kadakassery and Navamukunda HSS in Thirunavaya makes it a fitting alternative, albeit with its own challenges. Schools from areas like Parappanangadi and Kondotty will need to consider travel costs, filling a gap that challenges their budgets.

The Need for Sustainable Solutions

Creating and maintaining a synthetic track is costly—estimates suggest building a 400-meter track could reach up to five crore INR and has a lifespan of only five years. If the government initiates the construction of such tracks, we might witness growth in the sports sector. There is a real need for better facilities to support the numerous budding athletes who aspire to participate in state and national-level championships.

In conclusion, while Malappuram’s athletes face uncertainties, there is a collective hope that both the government and local education boards will take the necessary steps to ensure a brighter future for sports in the region.
