Neeraj Chopra to Command India at World Championships!

Neeraj Chopra to Lead India at World Championships: Javelin Throwers Set for Historic Participation

In September, India will make its mark at the World Championships in Tokyo, boasting the largest contingent of men’s javelin throwers among all competing nations. Leading this talented group is Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medalist who has become a beacon of hope and inspiration for many aspiring athletes in India.

Alongside Chopra, three other promising javelin throwers – Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh, and Rohit Yadav – will also represent the country. This announcement comes as the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) finalized a dynamic 19-member team for the championship scheduled from September 13 to 21.

Rohit Yadav made headlines by receiving an invitation to join the team at the last minute, as a result of withdrawals from athletes ranked higher than him globally. In the previous championships held in Hungary in 2023, he was unable to compete due to an injury. Still, the last edition witnessed a remarkable achievement with three Indian throwers, including Chopra, reaching the finals.

This upcoming championship will be a landmark event as it marks the first time that four Indian athletes will be competing in the men’s javelin category. Chopra qualified as a wild card entrant, owing to his status as the defending champion. In this scenario, the rules allow one additional participant, making it possible for three more athletes to join him. Notably, Chopra achieved the qualifying distance of 85.50 meters, while the other three athletes earned their spots based on their world rankings.

Adille Sumariwalla, a spokesperson for the AFI, expressed optimism during a virtual press conference, stating, “I am particularly pleased that we have four men’s javelin throwers who have qualified. We hope they will all reach the finals this time.” He continued by reminiscing about the previous championships when Rohit Yadav could not defend his place, but the other three competitors performed admirably, finishing among the top six.

India will face competition from powerhouse nations like Germany, Finland, and Poland, all fielding three participants each in the men’s javelin event. Additionally, two athletes each have qualified from countries like Japan and Sri Lanka.

The Complete Indian Team for the Championships

The AFI has put together a diverse team of 19 athletes, with five women included. Among the last-minute additions are Tejas Shirse in the men’s 110m hurdles and Sandeep Kumar in the men’s 35km race walk. Both athletes were invited due to the withdrawal of other competitors ranked above them.

Athletes can qualify automatically by exceeding specific performance marks, while others can secure a spot through their world rankings. The AFI aims to fill any vacant slots promptly, ensuring that the team is at its best.

While the Indian contingent has expanded, not all qualifying athletes are part of the team. For example, Akshdeep Singh, who earned his spot through world ranking, has been ruled out due to fitness issues. Similarly, Nandini Agasara, the Asian champion in the heptathlon, is still recuperating from an elbow injury. Avinash Sable, a star in the 3000m steeplechase, qualified but will miss the event following an ACL surgery.

However, some athletes like Gulveer Singh and Pooja are set to compete in multiple events. Gulveer qualified for both the 5,000m and 10,000m, while Pooja qualified for the women’s 800m and 1500m.

Conclusion

As the World Championships approach, India stands poised to showcase its rising talent in athletics, particularly in men’s javelin throw. With Neeraj Chopra leading the charge and a strong support team comprising Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh, and Rohit Yadav, they are ready to make history. The excitement is palpable, and the nation eagerly awaits their performance in Tokyo.
