Love in the Time of Serial Killers: A Quirky Romance for the Sceptics
As someone who doesn’t usually pick up romance novels, I found myself drawn to Love in the Time of Serial Killers during my recent beach vacation. Honestly, I thought it would be a light read, just something to pass the time while soaking up the sun. But to my surprise, it turned out to be not only fun but an engaging romance that had me hooked from the start.
Meet Phoebe Walsh
The story revolves around Phoebe Walsh, a PhD candidate who’s also a true crime enthusiast. This summer, she’s back in Florida to sort out her late father’s estate and work on her dissertation. She has a special interest in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood, a book that has captured her imagination since childhood. Phoebe even drags along a heavy desk, trying her best to stay focused on her writing.
When she gets to her old house at midnight, she struggles with the hefty desk. Out of the blue, a man appears and offers to help. Clad in a casual outfit, with his hair hiding part of his face, this stranger makes Phoebe’s instincts kick in. With her love for true crime, she immediately assumes he must be a serial killer. After all, he seems a bit too cheery for such a late hour.
Her suspicions only grow when she hears strange noises from his house at night, and then sees him looking suspiciously messy. Maybe it’s blood? Can you imagine the fear? So close to danger, right next door!
His name is Sam Dennings, and although he gives off creepy vibes after dark, by day he seems relatively normal. As Phoebe spends more time in Florida, she’s surprised to find herself drawn to Sam’s easygoing nature. Even though love is far from her mind, the attraction is undeniable.
Old Friendships and New Connections
Soon, Phoebe bumps into her childhood friend Alison, who now works at the local library. Their past friendship soured by teenage turmoil leaves Phoebe unsure about rekindling things. But Alison is eager to reconnect, reminding Phoebe that life’s too short for grudges. This relationship showcases how friendships can evolve, even after a bitter history.
Phoebe experiences memories of her childhood that are far from rosy. The author, Alicia Thompson, beautifully portrays her struggles with a father who was often angry and a mother who always seemed to submit. Phoebe feels the burden of guilt for her parents’ troubles, which is something that haunts her throughout the book.
Unlike Phoebe, her younger brother Conner seems to have a more carefree attitude, hilariously in love with his Indian girlfriend, Shani. Their brother-sister banter is one of the highlights of the story and adds a touch of warmth as they support each other through life’s ups and downs.
Falling in Love and Overcoming Fears
With Sam’s arrival in Phoebe’s life, things take an interesting turn. His unrefined charm and simple personality contrast sharply with the turbulent upbringing she endured, leading to a growing connection between them. Sam may not be your typical romantic hero, but it’s his genuine warmth that draws Phoebe in.
However, love often comes with its own set of complications. Phoebe struggles with feelings of doubt and fear as she gets closer to Sam. Her emotional baggage weighs her down, causing her to pull away just when things start to heat up. Thankfully, Thompson doesn’t follow the usual romantic clichés, and the story manages to offer a satisfying resolution.
Love in the Time of Serial Killers works on multiple levels. It portrays a tight-knit community of adults who support one another, shows the realities of complicated relationships, and features a sweet romance that defies expectations. It’s a book for cynics, skeptics, and even the hidden optimists among us.
In the end, this novel is an unexpectedly delightful experience that radiates warmth, humor, and a touch of quirkiness. If you’re like me and think romance novels may not be your thing, I urge you to give this one a try—it just might change your mind.
