New Delhi. World elder abuse awareness day: In India, the elderly have always been considered the backbone of the family and have been placed at the top level in terms of respect, but due to the changing environment, the elderly have today been marginalized. This is the reason that every day one gets to hear about the physical or mental abuse of the elderly and their misbehavior. Not only the society but the elderly in the family are facing many problems. A recent report by Helppage India, an NGO working for the elderly, states that abuse of elders is a sensitive topic in most of the Indian households in India. On the other hand, according to the health experts associated with the geriatric department in hospitals, the elderly are looking for treatment for the problems of society and family in hospitals.

The Helppage India report states that there are three main people who harass the elderly. Relatives 36 percent, sons 35 percent and daughters-in-law 21 percent. Whereas 57 percent of the elderly have complained of being disrespected. In addition, verbal abuse 38 percent, neglect 33 percent, economic abuse 24 percent, and 13 percent of the elderly reported physical abuse in the form of beatings and slaps. In Delhi alone, 74 percent of the elderly feel that such abuse is prevalent in the society while 12 percent were the victims themselves. Elders consider their sons 35 per cent and daughters-in-law 44 per cent as the biggest perpetrators of abuse. Nationally, 47 per cent of the victims of abuse said they had stopped talking to family as a response to the abuse, compared to 83 per cent in Delhi.

Gurjar says that when patients are given very few medicines when there is no specific disease, they complain and demand more medicines.

He told that his grandson threw him out of the house and the daughter-in-law filed a case of domestic violence. At the same time, after being thrown out of the house, he had to sue under compulsion. , The second case was of an elderly woman, who came for treatment for some minor illness, but her problem was only loneliness. There are many other elderly patients who are suffering from Elderly Abuse, Loneliness, Poverty and Neglect of Family and try to cure with the help of medicines.

, At the same time, there was a case of an old woman who used to come to the doctor every 15 days. He didn’t have any children. Only nervousness and restlessness was his illness. Many times she was told that she was fine but she was not ready to accept it. She used to feel fine by taking medicines.
