In a recent report released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), a stark reality emerges regarding the condition of public libraries across America. The report highlights that many public library buildings are not in good shape, and essential repairs are being neglected.

Even more concerning is that 61% of libraries have at least one building feature that could pose a health or safety risk.

Many of these libraries anticipate that repairs will have to be postponed for at least three more years. Alarmingly, 39% of these libraries face backlogs exceeding $100,000.

The reliance on local funding often makes it difficult for libraries, especially in small or rural areas, to secure the necessary funds for repairs. This problem is compounded by ongoing funding cuts and broader challenges that public libraries face. To make matters worse, libraries cannot use federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for building repairs or construction.

Libraries as Community Lifelines

Helmick pointed out, “In times of emergency, entire communities, including federal first responders, lean on public library spaces for computers and reliable internet connections, access to food and water, and help with disaster relief funds.” Thus, it’s crucial that these facilities are equipped to handle emergencies effectively.

The GAO’s extensive survey included over 16,400 public libraries across all 50 states, four territories, and the District of Columbia. They conducted on-site visits to 21 public libraries and two tribal libraries spread out across seven different states.
