The moment you step into Whitney’s studio, you feel its inviting charm. The building, infused with a touch of 1950s Greek revival architecture, has a character all its own. While it could easily pass as a spare bedroom, Whitney has transformed it into her personal sanctuary.
“My iPad is my constant companion,” she says. “Whether I’m on campus, teaching, or back home, it travels with me. It’s perfect for quick sketches.” The studio features large floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural light to fill every corner, making it ideal for both traditional art and watching Buffalo’s ever-changing weather, all while enjoying a cup of hot coffee.
A Space to Reflect and Create
One of Whitney’s favorites is watching the rain or snow from her studio—it keeps her motivated. She wears many hats: she’s a part-time student, a freelancer, and a night professor, all while juggling a full-time overnight job. “It’s a lot to manage, and it leaves little time for personal projects,” she admits.
If she had to pick her most creative hours, it would be late at night when the world is quiet. “In those peaceful hours, inspiration flows effortlessly.” The daylight hours often see less productivity, especially during the summer.
A Focused Workspace
For a more effective work environment, Whitney decided to simplify her setup. She transitioned from two monitors to just one, which has greatly improved her focus. “Fewer screens mean fewer distractions,” she notes. She also upgraded her workspace by switching her smaller Wacom Cintiq to a larger 24-inch model, which made all the difference.
One crucial upgrade she made was her chair. “I moved from a well-worn college relic to an ergonomic Secretlab TITAN. Since I spend so much time sitting, it’s important to take care of my back and knees,” Whitney emphasizes.
Artistic Essentials and Seasonal Decor
Whitney’s studio is filled with her favorite supplies—she loves Winsor & Newton drawing inks and often experiments by mixing them with gold mica paint for unique visual effects. Around the studio, she has a few cozy touches that make the atmosphere even more nurturing.
“I like to change my decor according to the seasons,” she explains. In winter, she lights an apple spice-scented candle; in fall, it’s pumpkin, and in spring, floral scents fill the air. These touches help her feel more relaxed and focused when she’s deep in her work.
Even though her plants are mostly faux, Whitney finds joy in creating a serene atmosphere. “I have a throw blanket always ready on my chair,” she adds, sharing that it’s perfect for quick naps between classes or work sessions.
Cherished Memories and Creative Interests
Apart from her art supplies, Whitney has a collection of album covers, particularly from animated films. “I’m a huge cinephile,” she mentions, and these album covers add color and a cinematic touch to her studio.
She fondly remembers her beloved Corgi, Hiccup, who kept her company during her creative sessions until recently. Together with her English Angora rabbit, Kaori, the pair made her studio even more lively and entertaining.
Embracing Creativity
A vibrant space paves the way for imagination, and Whitney’s studio reflects her personality. While she was once swayed by her friends to pick up gaming gear like a Switch or Steam Deck, she finds little time for such distractions now.
She did, however, invest in a used Cameo printer, planning to create stickers and bookmarks for her illustrations. Unfortunately, her curious bunny chewed on the power cord shortly after bringing it home!
