Thrilling & Heartwarming New Middle Grade Novels to Enjoy!

Discovering Exciting New Middle Grade Novels

Finding the perfect book for kids can feel like being a detective, but instead of searching for clues, you’re on a quest to bring joy. Helping children discover new middle-grade novels is not just rewarding; it’s a joy-filled adventure. As a children’s librarian, I often talk to kids about what they love to read. Whether it’s figuring out their reading level, their favorite genre, or what characters they want to see more of, I enjoy the thrill of matching them with a book they’ll cherish. Seeing their joy when they find “the one” is incredibly fulfilling. It’s one of the many reasons why I love my job.

Every year, a plethora of new novels hits the shelves, and I make it a point to read the latest additions. While there are many genres available, I have focused on some amazing recent middle-grade novels that are realistic fiction. However, it’s good to remember that mystery, fantasy, and horror also hold a special place in the hearts of 8- to 12-year-olds. Let’s dive into some exciting picks!

1. The Moon Without Stars by Chanel Miller

Meet Luna, a 13-year-old girl who feels awkward and anxious like many of her peers. Without realizing it, she lets her embarrassment keep her from being herself. Luna loves creating zines with her best friend, Scott. However, things take a turn when her zines catch the attention of the popular girls at school. Suddenly, Luna finds herself in the spotlight, juggling her growing popularity with her desire to stay true to her friend and herself. This heartfelt story beautifully illustrates the struggles of fitting in while remaining authentic.

2. Fooled by Susan Haas and Lexi Haas

This remarkable tale centers around Lil and her friends, students in a program designed for kids with special needs. Lil, who has cerebral palsy, uses a motorized wheelchair and an alternative communication device. Their school’s principal wants to keep these children separate from others and prevent them from participating in extracurricular activities. Refusing to accept this unfair treatment, Lil and her friends join forces to fight for inclusivity. Co-written by a mother-daughter duo who are both disability advocates, this book shines a light on the importance of equality and friendship.

3. The Treasure of Ocean Parkway by Sarvenaz Tash

This gripping mystery is the second book in a series but can be enjoyed as a standalone. Thea discovers an intriguing mystery hidden among her grandfather Errol’s things. Unsure how to solve it alone, she seeks help from her friends Roya and Amin, who run a mystery podcast. Together, they embark on a thrilling adventure that requires both teamwork and bravery as Thea learns to stand up for herself and seek answers.

4. Chris Makes a Friend by Alex Gino

Chris lives with her sister and their mom, who struggles with chronic pain. After their mom undergoes surgery, Chris and Becca are sent to stay with their grandparents for the summer—a plan that neither child is thrilled about. Away from her friend Vicky and feeling lonely, Chris meets Mia, who is also staying with her grandparents. Their instant connection helps Chris navigate her feelings of friendship and offers a touching look at how unexpected relationships can bloom.

5. Goodbye, French Fry by Rin-rin Yu (Releasing February 17, 2026)

Ping-Ping feels like she’s stuck between two worlds—neither fully American nor Chinese. Although she enjoys a good life with her best friend, piano lessons, and taekwondo, everything changes when her father’s job may take the family to Kenya. Determined to stay close to her friends and life in America, Ping-Ping and her brother Xy come up with creative ways to raise money. This story beautifully captures the struggle of identity and family.

These middle-grade novels are more than just stories; they are gateways to understanding different perspectives, cultivating friendships, and learning about courage. If you’re looking for new middle-grade reads, these titles should be on your must-read list.
