Thrilled for Our World Cup Win: A Bright Future for Women’s Cricket!

Jemimah Rodrigues: Excitement for Women’s Cricket After Historic World Cup Victory

Mumbai: The recent triumph of India’s women’s cricket team at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup has marked a significant milestone for the sport in the country. This victory reflects the dedication, teamwork, and evolving strength of women’s cricket in India. During a heartfelt discussion on JioStar’s ‘Celebrating Champions,’ Jemimah Rodrigues shared her journey and emphasized the unity of the team.

Jemimah expressed her amazement at winning the World Cup, saying, “I still can’t find the right words to describe this feeling. After dreaming about this moment for so long, it still feels unreal. My journey started when I was only 11 years old, dreaming of lifting the World Cup while watching Sachin Tendulkar from my balcony. Finally, seeing that dream come true is beyond anything I could have imagined. I haven’t been able to sleep since, but it feels amazing.”

Reflecting on her early days in the national team, she recalled her nervousness when she first entered the dressing room. “I was so excited to be with legends like Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj while Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur were stepping into leadership roles. I remember feeling intimidated during my first net session when I saw Jhulan’s long run-up. But she came up to me and said she had been following my performances and that I deserved to be here. That encouragement from someone so accomplished made a huge difference. Now, we strive to provide the same warmth to the next generation of players.”

Jemimah also acknowledged the role of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in supporting women’s cricket. “What Jay Shah did was revolutionary. He ensured that both men’s and women’s cricket receive equal treatment. The BCCI supported us even before we won the World Cup, laying a foundation we could build upon. We never felt short of anything—whether it was training facilities, coaches, or medical support. This victory is a testament to that consistent backing.”

She feels honored to be part of a legacy built by earlier women cricketers. “This World Cup is for the pioneers of women’s cricket—those who played without fame, money, or support but purely for the love of the game. They laid the groundwork, and we are now reaping the rewards. We won this not just for ourselves but for each of them. During our victory lap, we made sure to thank those legends.”

Jemimah is enthusiastic about the future of women’s cricket, believing that their World Cup victory will pave the way for much-needed changes. “Coach Amol Muzumdar’s focus on team bonding has been incredible. Our unity has become our strongest asset. This team genuinely celebrates each other’s successes and supports one another through challenges.”

Looking back at her childhood, she reminisced, “It feels amazing to see how far we’ve come. I was the only girl among 500 boys at MIG Cricket Club in Bandra. After the 2017 World Cup, things started changing, and now we have special training facilities just for girls. It’s heartwarming to see parents encouraging their children to play like me. But we realize that as world champions, we have a bigger responsibility to set a good example.”

Jhulan Goswami, a legendary cricketer and JioStar expert, praised Jemimah’s commitment. “From the beginning, Jemimah has been exceptional. Her growth has been impressive, and she takes her role seriously, especially in crucial matches against tough opponents. It’s a joy to have her in the team as she embodies true commitment and teamwork.”

Jemimah fondly remembers how her passion for cricket began. “I was a sporty girl, always choosing to play over studying. Watching the 1992 World Cup made me want to be part of this beautiful game. Sports have always brought me joy, and I just focused on enjoying every moment.”

Reflecting on the transformation in women’s cricket, she said, “Since the change in BCCI policies, we’ve seen remarkable growth in women’s cricket. The introduction of equal pay and the Women’s Premier League (WPL) has greatly supported players. The WPL has provided immense exposure, helping young talents adapt to high-pressure scenarios.”

Jemimah concluded by stating, “The financial backing and opportunities provided by WPL have changed the face of domestic cricket. Players like me now share valuable experiences with younger teammates. This victory is only the beginning, and we are committed to building a bright future for women’s cricket in India.”

As Jemimah and her teammates continue to inspire the next generation, the world eagerly awaits the further evolution of women’s cricket.
