Luka Dončić: The Lone Star Making Mavericks Look Foolish
The Dallas Mavericks are experiencing a rocky start to their season, and it’s hard to ignore how Luka Dončić is making them look less competitive than they should be. While it’s often said that “defense wins championships,” the Mavericks’ struggle to score has been painfully evident.
In their season opener against the San Antonio Spurs, Dallas managed an offensive rating of just 91.1. This was the worst among all teams in their first game of the season, falling short by over 15 points in terms of offensive efficiency. The Mavericks improved their score to 107 in their next game against the Washington Wizards, but that raises a question: Is 107 points really impressive when you lose to a team like the Wizards? At this point, the Mavs have yet to secure a single win this season.
The Mavericks seem to be adhering to a philosophy of stacking their roster with size and defensive prowess. Their starting lineup is massive, featuring players like Klay Thompson, Cooper Flagg, PJ Washington, Dereck Lively II, and a center-turned-power-forward, Anthony Davis. But this strategy needs the right balance of offense, which they currently lack. Point guard duties have fallen to rookie Cooper Flagg, who is struggling. He has a shooting percentage of just 37% from the field and has recorded more turnovers than assists—eight turnovers against six assists.
Is Too Much Expected from Rookie Flagg?
While Cooper Flagg’s inexperience shows, it’s important to remember that he’s still young and learning. The idea of playing him at point guard isn’t a quick-fix solution; rather, it’s a long-term investment in his development. Just like Jason Kidd did with Giannis Antetokounmpo, letting a younger player take on a challenging role can set him up for future success. But the Mavericks need to focus on decisions that can yield immediate results, especially since they traded away Luka Dončić for Anthony Davis—a move that many believe may haunt them.
Speaking of Luka, he’s showing a much different story this season. So far, he has scored 92 points over just two games, which matches the total score of the Mavericks in their opener against the Spurs. He accomplished this against solid defenses, including last season’s 6th and 7th-ranked teams, Minnesota and Golden State, while also playing without the star power of LeBron James to distract defenders.
Dončić has combined his scoring with impressive stats: 23 rebounds, 17 assists, and an outstanding 62% shooting from the field. This could very well be the best basketball he has ever played.
The Transformation of “Skinny Luka”
A significant factor in Luka’s outstanding performance has been his weight loss. While he had been an impressive force in Dallas, he had started to lose some speed and agility. In fact, his average points in the paint dropped noticeably over the prior seasons. However, he showed up this season looking leaner and quicker. In just the opening game, Luka racked up an impressive 26 points in the paint alone and has made more free-throw attempts in his first two games than he had in the previous full season.
He’s not just scoring—he’s also gotten more involved in defense. While he’s not yet someone who can stop every opponent, it’s clear he’s found a way to be more active on that end of the court. He led the Lakers in deflections during the opening game and held up reasonably well in defensive match-ups.
Mavericks’ Struggles To Balance Offensive and Defensive Play
Despite these developments, the Mavericks are struggling to reclaim their previous glory. Luka’s individual brilliance can’t mask the underwhelming performance of his teammates. The new roster is cumbersome and lacks effective point-of-attack defenders. Players like D’Angelo Russell and Thompson are not contributing defensively as needed.
Although Dallas has put together a defensive-focused lineup, they are far from being a top-performing defensive team. Unlike the previous season when they paired strong offensive output with solid defense, they now lack both elements.
The good news? The Mavericks are likely to improve as the season progresses. However, it’s crucial that they find ways to support Luka’s abilities rather than rely solely on a defensive strategy that isn’t yielding results.
If this opening week is any indication, Luka is coming out on top in this split, showing how important balanced gameplay is. After all, while defense may win championships, the Mavericks need both defense and offense, and they need it fast.
