How a Bold Idea Ignited This Thrilling Indie Adventure

How a Simple Idea Sparked a Colorful Indie Adventure: The Knightling

When you first see The Knightling, the vibrant colors immediately catch your eye. This indie open-world action-adventure RPG is a treat for the senses, filled with charm and an undeniable radiance that sets it apart. In the world of adventure games, it’s refreshing to play as a knight in training, but there’s a twist—you don’t have a sword; you only have a shield. This unique concept is the brainchild of Twirlbound, a studio known for its previous game, Pine.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Matthijs van de Laar, the creative director, writer, and CEO of Twirlbound. He shared some insights into the thought process behind The Knightling and how a single idea turned into this whimsical adventure that appeals to a broad audience.

A Journey to Find Sir Lionstone

In The Knightling, you take on the role of a young knight tasked with finding his missing mentor, Sir Lionstone. Armed only with Sir Lionstone’s shield, players traverse various enchanting environments in the world known as Clesseia. The goal? Solve platform puzzles and fight off bandits and monsters while unraveling the secrets of the shield.

Matthijs explains that their objective was to mix open-world design with nimble platforming mechanics. The result is a game that lasts around 20 hours but is filled with challenges, intriguing characters, and a well-developed story. “We love adding color to our games, and we believe the world could always use a splash of brightness,” he shares.

Grounded in Reality

While The Knightling has a vibrant fantasy vibe reminiscent of games like Breath of the Wild, it also draws inspiration from real-life locales. “We take a lot from the real world to create an authentic setting,” Matthijs tells me. For instance, the architecture of Clesseia features designs inspired by Byzantine culture, including colorful clothing and arched structures that invite exploration.

A Shield Without a Sword

The kernel of the game sprouted from a simple yet impactful idea: giving the main character a shield instead of a sword. “This choice sparked creative thinking about the design and potential uses of a shield,” Matthijs explains. Rather than being just a defensive tool, the shield can glide overhead, aid in sliding down hills, and even roll with the player. The design team thoroughly enjoyed brainstorming how to make the most of this idea. They set boundaries to keep the gameplay intuitive, ensuring that players would not feel overwhelmed by too many features.

A Shift in Development Philosophy

The Knightling marks a significant change in development style compared to Twirlbound’s previous game, Pine. This earlier project focused heavily on systemic gameplay mechanics, which meant less time for dynamic moments like combat and exploration. “With The Knightling, we wanted to focus more on creating fluid movements that feel great from the very beginning,” says Matthijs.

The game also follows a more intentional pacing that allows players to explore new regions and learn unique mechanics, resulting in a heightened sense of progress and accomplishment.

Sticking with Unity

Twirlbound chose to use the Unity engine for this project. Despite the challenges of developing an open-world game with it, the team felt comfortable with the tool. “Unity lets us customize our toolset, and familiarity with the engine helps us meet our needs more effectively,” Matthijs explains. The decision was strategic, as switching to a new engine would require extensive retraining.

A Team Effort

Being part of a close-knit team has its advantages. Matthijs emphasizes the importance of open communication, allowing team members to voice ideas and resolve challenges effortlessly. Additionally, support from Saber Interactive, their publisher, has been invaluable, especially during the tough times of the pandemic. This collaboration has been crucial in bringing The Knightling to life.
