Honoring Jane Austen at 250: A YA Horror Icon’s Legacy & More!

Celebrating Jane Austen at 250: A Reflection on YA Literature and More

In 2025, the world of young adult (YA) literature seems to be in a state of calm. There have been noteworthy book releases and several adaptations, but overall, it feels quiet. This isn’t completely surprising. The coverage of YA literature has been declining. Many platforms that once actively discussed teen novels are either shrinking or have sadly closed down. Furthermore, with the ongoing trend of book censorship, YA titles seem disproportionately targeted, adding to the quietness.

However, let’s not assume that YA books aren’t making waves! Social media platforms like TikTok have been instrumental in promoting new releases, especially high-budget YA titles. But there’s a difference between casual buzz on social media and detailed discussions or critiques that delve deeper into YA literature. This lack of coverage leaves some amazing stories untold. It’s disappointing, especially since YA books continue to resonate with readers and play an important role in diverse stories reflecting our society.

As we step into October, let’s take a moment to consider what’s been happening lately in the world of YA literature. Despite the hush, there are still some fantastic developments worth celebrating.

One exciting update comes from the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature, where an impressive longlist of entries was revealed, featuring remarkable YA and middle grade titles.

This month, the YA community also mourned the loss of Diane Hoh, an author known for her classic 90s horror tales. She passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of unforgettable stories.

September also saw some fabulous new YA speculative fiction titles launching. Alex Brown has shared a list of the most anticipated YA speculative fiction coming out in September and October, making it a good time to discover fresh reads!

In honor of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday, I contributed an article to the School Library Journal that explored how her works have been reimagined and retold in contemporary YA literature. Austen’s keen insights into society and relationships continue to inspire new generations.

If you are eagerly awaiting the adventures from My Life with the Walter Boys, prepare yourself for Season 3. It promises to bring back the charming chaos we’ve come to love.

For fans of fantasy and science fiction, the winners of this year’s Dragon Awards in YA have been announced, celebrating the best of the genre. Meanwhile, don’t miss the titles featured on the shortlist for the 2025 Young Adult Prize, which spotlights contributions to Australian literature.

In a poignant discussion, YA author Britney S. Lewis has opened up about the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Black girls in YA fantasy, calling for more nuanced and genuine portrayals in future works.

Exciting adaptations are on the horizon as well! Lauren Roberts’s Powerless series is being transformed into a film, and Monica Ojeda’s acclaimed novel Jawbone is getting the horror film treatment.

On a different note, it’s worth mentioning the rise of the YA novella in 2025, an interesting trend captured in a recent piece by Publishers Weekly. Keeping with adaptations, fans of Jenny Han will be thrilled to hear about the movie based on The Summer I Turned Pretty. Additionally, We Were Liars has been confirmed for a second season, stirring excitement among its reader base.

Despite the overall quieter atmosphere for YA literature, it’s intriguing to note that sales of YA fiction in paperback and hardcover have seen a drop this year, while nonfiction formats are experiencing a slight uptick. There’s a question looming around when we’ll see Kody Keplinger’s next YA book, and it turns out a highly anticipated title is set to release next spring.

If you’re looking to fill your reading list, now is a perfect time! Why not explore last month’s new YA fiction releases along with fresh YA comics and nonfiction reads?

Let’s remain hopeful that as we draw closer to the end of the year, we’ll witness more stories and voices emerging in the YA landscape. There’s so much potential within diverse and inclusive literature!
