Justice for Kwandokuhle: A Soweto Mother’s Heartbreaking Story
In the heart of Soweto, a grieving mother is calling for justice after the untimely death of her newborn, just nine days after birth. Phumla Gubudela, 27 years old, believes her baby’s death was caused by negligence at Zola Clinic. She recounts a traumatic experience where clinic staff ignored her pleas during a critical moment in her childbirth.
On September 13, she was rushed to the clinic, experiencing intense labour pains. After a brief examination, a nurse informed her that she was 5cm dilated, indicating that the baby was on the way. However, when Phumla entered the labour room, things took a distressing turn. Struggling to cope with the labour pains, she knelt down, only to be told by a nurse to stand up and walk to her. “I told her I could feel the baby coming out,” Phumla recalls, “but she insisted that I come to her table.”
As Phumla moved towards the nurse, her baby, whom she had named Kwandokuhle, was born, hitting the floor. This haunting moment has left Phumla with an unbearable heartache, wishing that her baby had succumbed to illness rather than the circumstances of her birth.
Medical records from Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital revealed that Kwandokuhle died due to complications from blunt force head trauma. Following the tragic news, the Gauteng police launched an investigation into the events surrounding the infant’s death. While no arrests have yet been made, the police are actively looking into the case.
Phumla’s experience at the clinic raises serious questions about patient care and staff protocols in hospitals. After giving birth, both mother and baby were initially admitted, but Phumla was discharged the very next day, on September 14, while Kwandokuhle remained for additional examinations. Tragically, three days later, after breastfeeding, the new mother noticed that her daughter had become weak.
“I rushed her to Bheki Mlangeni, where they informed me that her heartbeat had stopped. They attempted to resuscitate her, but a few moments later, they said she was gone,” Phumla recounted, her voice choked with emotion.
In a cruel twist, nurses questioned Phumla about bruises on Kwandokuhle’s hands, suggesting that something was amiss. It was then that she revealed the heartbreaking truth of her child’s birth—the two had been separated after the traumatic incident. After hearing her account, staff members recognized the gravity of the situation and called the police, stating that this was no natural death.
Despite her loss, the clinic has yet to take accountability for what Phumla describes as reckless conditions. The matron at the clinic informed her that any legal pursuit would be handled by the hospital’s lawyers, leaving her feeling abandoned in her grief.
“Losing Kwandokuhle is a pain I carry every day,” Phumla shared with anguish. “I often wonder how she would have looked today, how big she would be.” Her reflections on motherhood have turned into a constant reminder of her loss, punctuated by thoughts of what could have been.
In response to the incident, the Gauteng health department has announced an internal investigation to scrutinize the circumstances around the birth and the aftermath. They have also extended counseling and psychosocial support to Phumla, a small consolation for the immense sorrow she endures.
While this investigation unfolds, Phumla hopes for justice not just for her daughter, but for all mothers who have faced similar situations. No family should have to experience such a tragedy due to negligence in healthcare settings.
In the face of such heartbreak, Phumla’s story has sparked discussions regarding the quality of healthcare in South Africa. As communities rally around her, she stands resolute in seeking accountability and better care for future mothers.
If you feel moved by Phumla’s story and wish to show your support, remember to spread awareness. Together, let’s stand up for justice in healthcare!
