The fast of Hartalika Teej is completely associated with Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva. How Mata Parvati did penance and asked Lord Shiva as her husband. This is also mentioned in the story related to this fast. This fast is observed on the day of Hasta Nakshatra Samyukta Tritiya of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. It is also called Kajari Teej. Performing this fast is not less than any penance. During the fasting for the whole day, nothing is eaten and even water is not drunk. This fast is broken on the next day. On the day of the fast, fruits etc. can be taken by telling the story in the evening.

There is a special importance of listening to the story in this fast. The story is heard after worshiping in the evening and then Jagran is done in the night. In this fast, Shiva Parvati is worshiped of clay, the stuff of honey is offered to Mother Parvati in a bamboo nugget. Haritalika Teej Vrat Katha should be heard after offering clothes to the three deities. The Muhurta for worship on this day is from 6.30 am to 8.33 am. If you want to worship during Pradosh period, then you can do it from 06:33 to 08:51 at night.

According to the legend, Mata Parvati did severe penance for Lord Shiva. In fact, since childhood, Mother Parvati had an unwavering love for Lord Shiva. Mother Parvati wanted to have Lord Shiva as her husband since many births. For this, he started rigorous penance since childhood on the banks of the Ganges in the Himalaya Mountains. Mother Parvati had given up food and water in this penance. She used to chew only dry leaves in food. Seeing such condition of Mother Parvati, her parents were very sad. One day Devrishi Narada went to his father with a proposal for the marriage of Parvati ji on behalf of Lord Vishnu. Mother Parvati’s mother and father were very happy with this proposal. After this he narrated this proposal to Mother Parvati. Mother Parvati was very sad to hear this news, because she had considered Lord Shiva as her husband in her mind. Mother Parvati told her problem to her friend. Mata Parvati turned down this marriage proposal.
Parvati ji told one of her friends that she would accept only Bholenath as her husband. On the advice of Sakhi, Parvati worshiped Lord Shiva in a cave in a dense forest. On the day of Bhadrapada Tritiya Shukla, Parvati ji duly worshiped Shivling from clay in Hasta Nakshatra and kept awake throughout the night. Pleased with the tenacity of Parvati, Lord Shiva accepted Mother Parvati as his wife.
It is said that with the harsh Kapasya with which Goddess Parvati found Lord Shiva, in the same way all the women who observe this fast should have a long life and have a happy married life.
