Empowering Latine Reads for an Enchanting Espooky Season

Celebrate the Espooky Season with Latine Reads

Even though Latine Heritage Month has come to an end, there’s still so much to celebrate—especially because it’s officially espooky season! This is my favorite time of year, and I’m thrilled to share some fantastic Latine books perfect for snuggling up with on chilly fall evenings. These reads may send a delightful shiver down your spine, and they’re suitable for various tastes; whether you lean toward the frightful, the eerie, or just enjoy stories with a hint of the supernatural, there’s something here for everyone!

A Spooky Selection of Latine Books

I tried my best to avoid repeating books I’ve mentioned recently, but I can’t help but highlight a few must-reads that fit perfectly into the season. You don’t want to miss Salt Bones by Jennifer Givhan, The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and The Possession of Alba Diaz by Isabel Cañas. Each of these has a gripping story that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the season.

The books listed below are ones I’ve loved during previous espooky seasons or have been eagerly waiting to dive into this October. You’ll discover a mix of witchy tales, poignant memoirs, and chilling thrillers that explore themes of the supernatural, and more.

Witches by Brenda Lozano

Witches takes us to the heart of Mexico. The story revolves around Paloma, the most legendary curandera (healer) in her town, who is murdered under mysterious circumstances. Journalist Zoe travels to San Felipe to uncover the truth and meets Paloma’s cousin, Feliciana—a woman struggling for acceptance in her community as a healer. This book tackles important issues like femicide in Mexico, making it a powerful and must-read.

The Witches of El Paso by Luis Jaramillo

Set in the 1940s, this story follows Nena, a teenager stuck in a mundane life until a mysterious nun appears, offering her the chance to travel through time. Now an old woman, Nena shares her past adventures with her niece, Marta. Their journey is filled with magic and self-discovery, making it both exciting and thought-provoking.

Jawbone by Monica Ojéda

Fernanda and Annelisa are two best friends bored with life at their bilingual academy. They decide to liven things up by creating their own bizarre rituals and a god of their making. However, their thrilling adventure takes a dark turn when their teacher has a mental breakdown. How the storylines connect remains a mystery waiting to unfold.

Sundown in San Ojuela by M.M. Olivas

This intriguing tale is set in a haunted Spanish hacienda. Among its twists, you’ll find a clairvoyant woman, Chupacabras, and ghosts. With elements of Pre-Hispanic folklore, this book promises a creepy ride through a desert town’s secrets.

Vanishing Daughters by Cynthia Pelayo

The haunting journey of journalist Briar Thorn begins when her mother dies. Haunted (literally) by her grief and the eerie happenings in her Victorian home, she discovers that her nightmares might be the key to unraveling a series of murders committed by a notorious killer in Chicago. Pelayo brings chilling reality and the supernatural together in this gripping story.

If We Survive This by Racquel Marie

Picture The Walking Dead meets Yellowjackets. Flora and her brother, Cain, find themselves surviving a global rabies outbreak that turns people into zombies. Instead of being the typical action heroine, Flora is a sensitive soul navigating a nightmare, showing us that bravery comes in many forms.

Somebody is Walking on Your Grave by Mariana Enriquez

This collection of essays explores cemeteries and death rituals in various cultures, inspired by the author’s reflections after a friend’s mother passed away. Enriquez blends travel Tales with deep meditations on loss and the haunting beauty of resting places. It’s both a captivating read and a perfect companion for Dia de Muertos preparations.

These Vengeful Wishes by Vanessa Montalban

Ceci returns to her mother’s village after her stepfather dies. In Santa Aguas, there’s a legend of La Cegua, a vengeful ghost leading victims to their demise. Montalban plays with the theme of folklore and the supernatural, giving Ceci’s life a thrilling yet eerie turn.

We Came to Welcome You by Vincent Tirado

This story explores themes of identity and systemic racism. A couple, Sol and Alice, move into a seemingly perfect gated community. However, their new life takes a dark twist as they encounter sinister happenings and the hidden history of their home.

Final Thoughts

I hope these recommendations bring you joy and chills during this espooky season! Each book offers a unique blend of thrill, mystery, and cultural richness, making them perfect for cozy evenings.
