The Associated Press recently got a glimpse of this unique setup, which is located about a 10-minute drive or an hour’s walk from Cortina’s lively streets. While the accommodations may seem basic, they are surrounded by the stunning backdrop of the Dolomites, creating a special environment for athletes to focus on their performance. Fabio Saldini, the Italian government commissioner overseeing Olympic infrastructure, described this location as a quiet spot where athletes can both relax and work out, offering the sounds of nature as a soothing backdrop.

Cortina’s Athletes Village exemplifies a temporary yet thoughtfully designed living space. Saldini emphasized that the village will not remain after the games, leading to a greener approach. “Nothing is permanent; the environment will not return to its previous state but will be improved,” he noted. This temporary setup is vital for meeting the accommodative needs of athletes, especially considering the geographically dispersed nature of the Milan Cortina Games.

In stark contrast, some nations have chosen different accommodations. For instance, Norway has decided on hotels for their skiers. Meanwhile, countries like the USA and Germany will house their athletes in these mobile homes. Despite the basic facilities, this village is more than just a place to sleep; it plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of community.

The village will see various winter sports, including women’s Alpine skiing and bobsledding during the Olympics, and it will continue to be utilized for the Paralympics from March 6 to 15. Each mobile home consists of two rooms accommodating up to two athletes each, complete with private bathrooms. However, athletes should prepare for chilly mornings, as the temperatures can dip significantly. Walking to the communal dining area for breakfast might require extra warmth, as athletes will need to gear up for the elements, guided by the ever-changing patter of weather in the mountainous region.

Living in mobile homes also brings unique challenges. According to Paride Casagrande, the village’s construction manager, the houses are surrounded by nature. “The wind is an element, and temperatures can be quite variable,” he explained. Despite the cold, the village offers a beautiful and tranquil setting for athletes to enjoy.

What’s more, every mobile home is equipped with heating controls, ensuring athletes can adjust the temperature to their liking—even during snowstorms. Each unit includes a thermostat and an infrared panel that aids in maintaining warmth, which is essential given the winter weather.

These mobile homes were carefully transported to Cortina on oversized trucks and will become part of Italy’s camping sites post-Olympics. Each spans about 18 square meters (approximately 200 square feet), with larger spaces specifically designed for Paralympians, including accessible facilities.

The total cost of the Athletes Village is approximately 38 million euros (around $44 million). While the mobile homes are not owned by the organizers, several will remain in Italy, contributing to local infrastructure after the games.

Despite some protests regarding environmental concerns—partly due to tree removal—Casagrande assured that the focus remains on maintaining the natural charm of the location. “We are committed to leaving the area in a better state than we found it,” he said.
