Christopher Luxon: Urgent Overhaul of Math Curriculum After Shocking Results

PM Christopher Luxon has expressed shock over the poor student achievement results in maths, prompting a quick action to change the curriculum. A study revealed that only 22% of students were at or above the curriculum level, with a staggering 63% falling more than a year behind.

Luxon emphasized the urgency to meet National’s target of 80% of students reaching their curriculum levels by 2030 despite the discouraging statistics. Labour leader Chris Hipkins supported the curriculum changes, highlighting the need for more teacher training and development.

The new curriculum aims to address the vagueness of the old system by setting specific benchmarks. Stanford, a representative, defended the changes, calling out unions for being ‘out of touch’ and insisting on the importance of improving maths education in New Zealand.

Luxon also discussed National’s initiatives in law and order as well as economic areas to ensure the safety and well-being of communities. Former PM Sir John Key emphasized the need to ease economic anxieties and race relations issues to create a balanced and harmonious society.
