This store will span about 229,000 square feet, which is bigger than a typical Walmart Supercenter that usually measures about 170,000 square feet. The implications of this move are significant.
What makes this mega-store different? According to Katie Jahnke Dale, an attorney for Amazon, this new shopping experience is designed particularly for today’s retail customers. Customers enjoy a safer and more pleasant shopping environment. This aligns with the growing trend of consumers preferring to shop in physical stores where they can see, touch, and feel products before making a purchase.
Amazon’s Learning Journey in Retail
Amazon has not always had an easy journey in physical retail. In the past, the company tried several retail concepts, such as the Amazon 4-Star stores, which only sold products rated highly by customers. They even launched Amazon Go stores that offered a unique “Just Walk Out” technology experience. However, due to various challenges and underwhelming performances, Amazon has had to shut down many of these stores.
For example, all Amazon Books stores across the U.S. and the UK have closed down, totaling 68 locations. The same fate has befallen Amazon Fresh grocery stores, especially after disappointing sales prompted closures in several locations.
