Dev Rishi, an AI expert from Rubrik, shared his insights after engaging with executives from 180 different companies. His discussions led him to identify four phases in the adoption of autonomous AI—an important concept where AI systems work independently, rather than merely responding to commands.

  1. Early Experimentation: This is where companies begin exploring prototype AI agents and define their goals.

  2. Formal Production: Here, companies transition from prototypes to actual work applications, which can be quite challenging.

  3. Scaling: In this phase, businesses aim to deploy these AI agents across their entire operations.

  4. Autonomous AI: This ultimate stage, which none of the companies had reached yet, involves completely independent AI systems.

Interestingly, Rishi found that about half of these companies are still in the early experimentation phase, while a smaller portion is actively working on moving to more advanced stages of adoption. However, a significant obstacle remains: security and governance concerns.

Integrating AI Agents into Workflows

Kathleen Peters from Experian elaborated on the challenges of integrating AI into existing frameworks. Companies often feel uneasy about what could happen if an AI agent makes a mistake or ‘oversteps’ established boundaries. This uncertainty is particularly apparent in highly regulated industries. For instance, Chandhu Nair from Lowe’s emphasized that while creating AI agents is relatively straightforward, understanding their role within the company remains ambiguous. “It’s almost like hiring numerous employees without a proper HR function,” he remarked, highlighting the complexities involved.

Many organizations are still figuring out who is responsible when something goes wrong with an AI agent, making it hard to establish accountability. Peters predicted that we would likely see public discussions about these issues in the coming years, especially as AI breaches and unexpected behavior capture media attention.

The Risks of Rogue AI Agents

Unfortunately, there’s always a risk that an AI agent could behave unexpectedly or ‘go rogue.’ Peters cautioned that we will likely face incidents that could cause significant reputational damage to companies. Such events will spark tough conversations about liability in the digital age, and could even lead to new regulations governing AI technology.

Despite these risks, there are also numerous success stories. Nair highlighted how Lowe’s has seen a positive return on investment from the AI integrated into its operations. Each of Lowe’s 250,000 store associates is paired with an AI agent equipped with extensive knowledge about products, enhancing their efficiency and customer interaction. “Getting the use cases right is essential,” Nair said, stressing that when customers see value in AI, adoption rates soar.

Finding Balance: Building Trust in AI

As companies work to integrate AI agents into the workforce, they are faced with a crucial decision: Should they build their own AI or depend on solutions from major vendors? Rakesh Jain from Mass General Brigham indicated that in sectors like healthcare, it is vital to have human oversight due to the complexities involved in patient care. “Algorithms can only do so much,” he noted, emphasizing the need for doctor involvement in crucial decisions.

For a fruitful future with AI, Rishi pointed out two critical elements for building trust: firstly, companies require systems that ensure agents operate within designated limits. Secondly, they need precise policies for when mistakes occur. Nair added that accountability, quality evaluation, and reviewing past actions are essential for building customer trust in AI systems. “Mistakes can happen, just like with humans,” he said, “but understanding them is crucial to improvement.”
