Aaron Drinan: Swindon Town’s Rising Star, ‘Drinaldo’
Swindon Town’s striker, Aaron Drinan, is currently lighting up the Football League with his impressive form. With eight league goals already this season, he’s enjoying a remarkable six-game scoring streak. Only Erling Haaland, with nine goals, has netted more across all four divisions of English football. If the season were to end today, it would mark Drinan’s second-best goal tally ever, and he’s just getting started!
Fans have affectionately dubbed him ‘Drinaldo,’ a nod to his flourishing talent and scoring prowess. His superb performance has even earned him a nomination for the Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month for September. To understand how Drinan has become such an integral player for Swindon, it’s essential to look back at his journey.
This upward swing comes after a period of struggle. For the previous two seasons—2023/24 and 2024/25—he managed only eight goals combined. A lot of this can be attributed to a significant injury setback earlier this year. Following a dramatic 3-3 draw with Port Vale back on February 8, Drinan suffered a PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) injury that sidelined him for almost three months.
He recalls, “I was gaining form, feeling great, and contributing to the team when the injury hit me out of the blue. I just tried to flick a ball, and my knee locked.” Initially, there were concerns that surgery might be necessary, but fortunately, he was able to recover without going under the knife. However, the recovery process was rigorous, involving seven weeks in a brace and dedicated rehab during the off-season.
Once he regained fitness, Drinan had to showcase his readiness for a new contract by completing a rigorous fitness test devised by the manager, Ian Holloway. Dubbed ‘The Run,’ this test was no easy feat, requiring a series of shuttle runs of increasingly longer distances. “It was a bit mad when I heard about it!” he laughs, remembering how he had to creatively record himself while doing the test, using a shoe to prop his phone while he sprinted up and down the pitch alone.
Interestingly, looking back, Drinan now sees that injury as a blessing in disguise. Given he didn’t play the remaining matches of the previous season, his body avoided excessive strain and downtime. “Not having that full season meant my body wasn’t taking a beating. I believe it helped me stay fresh and hungry during the summer,” he explains.
Despite a recent Achilles complaint that kept him out of the game against Newport, Drinan had the advantage of the international break to recover. He feels optimistic about what lies ahead: “With my confidence high and the way I’m converting chances, I think I can keep it going. The manager allows us freedom on the pitch, and that has helped everyone thrive.”
The team is currently performing well, sitting second in League Two, and Drinan has set his sights on reaching the 20-goal milestone this season. He understands that contributing significantly to the team’s success is just as vital. “If we can win the league while I’m achieving my goal tally, then that’s the perfect season for me. Scoring goals and achieving something as a team—there’s nothing better!”
If Drinan continues to excel in this form, Swindon Town could very well find themselves enjoying a promotion back to League One. There’s no doubt that the fans, who love watching ‘Drinaldo’ in action, have their hopes riding high.
