Smartphone Shipments Soar 7.3% YoY in Q2 2025; Vivo Dominates

In the second quarter of 2025, the smartphone market in India experienced a healthy growth of 7.3% year-on-year (YoY), as reported by a notable market research firm. This growth comes after a challenging period where the market faced two consecutive quarters of decline. In the first half of 2025, around 70 million smartphones were shipped in India, reflecting a modest 0.9% YoY growth. While the recovery is promising, factors like weak consumer demand and rising prices may hinder further advancements in the upcoming months.

Vivo Leads the Market

Vivo has secured its position as the top smartphone brand in India for the sixth consecutive quarter. Known for offering a diverse range of devices across various price points, Vivo’s strategy has worked well. Key models that contributed to this success include both high-end and affordable smartphones. Following Vivo, Samsung stands as the second-largest player in the market, enjoying a notable 21% growth influenced by the launch of innovative models from its Galaxy A, M, and F series. These smartphones incorporate advanced AI features, positioning them well for the mid-range consumer segment.

Oppo takes the third spot in India’s smartphone market. Their success can be attributed to popular models like the Oppo K13 and Oppo A5x, which have drawn interest due to their affordability and reliable service centre support.

Apple’s Exceptional Performance

In the premium segment, Apple has also showcased a remarkable performance, shipping 5.9 million units in the first half of 2025. This figure marks a strong 21.5% YoY increase. The iPhone 16 emerged as the top-selling model nationwide, representing about 4% of total smartphone shipments in the country.

Diverse Market Dynamics

The entry-level smartphone segment, with models priced under $100 (approximately ₹8,900), witnessed significant growth of 22.9%. This growth increased its market share from 14% to 16%, with Xiaomi leading the charge through affordable offerings like the Redmi A4 and Redmi A5.

Conversely, the mass budget segment (ranging from $100 to $200, around ₹17,500) saw only a slight uptick of 1.1% in shipments, but its market share declined from 44% to 42%. Brands like Vivo, Oppo, and Realme continue to dominate this sector, holding a collective 60% market share.

The mid-premium segment, which includes smartphones priced between $200 and $400 (approximately ₹35,100), experienced a decline of 2.5%, resulting in a reduced market share from 30% to 27%. Vivo, Samsung, and Oppo remain front-runners, while Motorola is also emerging through increased shipment volumes.

On a brighter note, the mid-premium segment, priced between $400 and $600 (around ₹52,600), achieved remarkable growth of 39.5%, boosting its market share from 4% to 5%. Oppo and OnePlus emerged as significant players in this area.

Super-Premium Segment Takes Flight

Among the more expensive options, the super-premium segment (prices above $800) rose by 15.8%, maintaining a steady 7% market share. Samsung dethroned Apple as the leader in this category, capturing 49% of the market with standout models like the Galaxy S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra.

When it comes to chipsets, smartphones powered by Qualcomm saw a meteoric rise of 37.6% YoY, taking 33.9% market share. In contrast, MediaTek’s market share decreased to 44.3% from a higher position, attributed to a 15.4% drop in shipments.

Future Outlook for Indian Smartphone Shipments

Looking ahead to the second half of 2025, the outlook for smartphone shipments is slightly cautious. Rising prices and shifting economic conditions may suppress demand, particularly in the budget-friendly segments. This could lead to a reduction in growth potential for affordable Android smartphones. However, iPhone sales are expected to continue to see upward trends with impressive double-digit YoY increases.

In summary, while the smartphone market in India is showing signs of recovery, challenges remain. Brands will need to adapt to shifting consumer preferences and economic realities as they plan for the future. The anticipated launch of new models and strategies focused on fresh shipments may become critical in maintaining momentum as the festive season approaches.
