I’m a huge fan of the Watchmen comic and all the excellent storytelling by Alan Moore. When it first came out, it completely changed how we see superheroes. The idea of deconstructing the superhero genre was unheard of back then. As a child, reading it blew my mind in the best way. The movie adaptation released in 2009 was also something I enjoyed; while my views on it have cooled over time, I still think it’s a fair take compared to some of director Zack Snyder’s other work. However, there are other superhero films that hit the dark and intelligent tone that Watchmen aimed for. Here are six movies that are even darker, sharper, and smarter than Watchmen.

1. Logan

Bittersweet and Beautiful

2. Kick-Ass

Hilariously Dark

Kick-Ass, released on March 22, 2010, may seem like a light-hearted film at first, but it’s filled with dark comedy. The action scenes are brutal, making other superhero movies feel tame in comparison. One important theme is that of obsession; the characters wrestle with the allure of power. From the overconfident main character, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, to Nicolas Cage’s revenge-driven character, the film dives deep into unsettling territories while keeping a touch of humor.

3. Dredd

Not Quite a Superhero

Even though Dredd is more of an anti-superhero film, it aligns well with the darker themes seen in Watchmen. Set in a dystopian world, we follow the main character, Judge Dredd, who judges and punishes criminals as he sees fit. 5. The Batman

A Deep Dive into the Character

Released on March 4, 2022, The Batman isn’t just another superhero movie; it’s more of a gritty crime thriller. Robert Pattinson’s performance gives Batman a sense of raw passion unlike any previous adaptations. This movie successfully showcases Bruce Wayne as a character who wears his Batman persona like a mask, unraveling the complexities of his dual identity. The film’s aesthetic immerses you in a dark Gotham City, making it a truly unique experience.

6. Chronicle

A Superhero Film with a Gimmick

Released on February 3, 2012, Chronicle is a clever mash-up of found-footage and superhero genres. It explores what happens when teenagers acquire superpowers, offering a realistic spin on the concept. The film doesn’t rely on clichés; it dives into character development, making their choices and struggles resonate with viewers. This nuanced storytelling sets it apart from many other superhero films.

Superhero Movies Can Be Dark Without Losing Their Heart

One reason I’ve changed my stance on Watchmen is that it lacks the emotional depth found in these films. While it grasps the events of the original story, it fails to capture their essence. On the other hand, these six movies do not fall into that trap; they embody darkness while maintaining a strong emotional core.
