Vivo X Fold 5: First Impressions and More
Vivo has come a long way since launching the X Fold 3 in 2023. This foldable smartphone made a distinct mark in the market, challenging established names like Samsung with its sleek design and improved camera capabilities. Now, Vivo is back with the X Fold 5, which brings various exciting upgrades while keeping the price at Rs. 1,49,999 for the model with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. But is it worth upgrading? Let’s dive into my experience with this new foldable device.
A Stylish and Slim Design
One of the first things you’ll notice about the Vivo X Fold 5 is its significantly slimmer and lighter profile compared to the X Fold 3. Unfolded, the device measures just 4.3mm, while it’s 9.2mm thick when folded. In contrast, the earlier model was bulkier at 5.2mm and 11.2mm. The weight of the X Fold 5 also dropped to a mere 217 grams – making it easier to handle.
The phone comes in a classy Titanium Grey hue. Holding it in your hand makes it feel premium. The back panel has a dual-layer coating, improving the overall tactile experience. It would be nice to see more colour options in the future, as the single colour choice does feel a bit limited.
Innovative Features
Vivo has introduced a new shortcut button positioned above the volume controls. This handy feature lets you customize actions, such as launching the camera, turning on the torch, recording a note, or enabling AI captions. The phone also boasts impressive durability. It is equipped with IP68, IP69, and IP5X protection, ensuring that it is both water and dust-resistant. The refined folding mechanism incorporates a carbon fiber support hinge and includes second-generation Armor Glass on the outer screen, maintaining sturdiness despite its lighter design.
Stunning Display
When unfolded, the Vivo X Fold 5 showcases a massive 8.03-inch flexible LTPO display. With a peak brightness of up to 4,500 nits, 412ppi pixel density, and Dolby Vision plus HDR10+ support, the visuals are stunning. It also refreshes at a smooth 120Hz and has a resolution of 2200×2480 pixels. The cover screen is 6.53 inches and offers a resolution of 1172 x 2748 pixels. This combination makes the device ideal for watching videos and browsing. More details on this will be available in my upcoming review.
Performance and Camera
The Vivo X Fold 5 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, which was also used in its predecessor. With 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to UFS 4.1 storage, the phone performs smoothly. You’ll find the Funtouch OS 15 running on Android 15, which adds a nice touch to the user experience.
The camera setup is another highlight. It features a triple-camera system branded by Zeiss, including:
- A 50-megapixel primary Sony IMX921 sensor with f/1.57 aperture and OIS.
- A 50-megapixel telephoto lens that offers 3x optical zoom and a macro capability.
- A 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 120-degree field of view.
Moreover, there’s a 20-megapixel camera on the cover screen and another one on the main display. This camera setup promises to offer impressive photography options, including Zeiss-branded modes and bokeh effects. Further details will be shared in my full review.
Long-lasting Battery
One of the standout features of the Vivo X Fold 5 is its robust 6,000mAh battery, which is packed into such a slim device. It supports 90W fast charging and 40W wireless charging, making it one of the best in its segment. Few foldable phones in India can boast such a large battery paired with fast charging capabilities.
Final Thoughts
To wrap it up, the Vivo X Fold 5 shines with its elegant design, lighter feel, and vibrant display. It offers an excellent experience for content consumption and casual browsing. The performance holds up well, and the camera capabilities appear promising compared to its predecessor. Competing in the foldable market, it faces rivals like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Stay tuned for my complete review, where we’ll delve deeper into whether the Vivo X Fold 5 is a worthy upgrade and how it stands against the competition.
