Lathadevi from Kerala passionately argued that changing the age requirement could set a wrong precedent. She emphasized that the principle behind implementing an age limit was to bridge generational gaps within the party and that any attempts to bypass it for personal benefit are unacceptable.
Besides Kerala, states like Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh also support enforcing the age-limit rule. A Tamil Nadu representative pointed out that 96% of party members in their state adhere to this rule, asserting that removing it would not be acceptable. On the other side, Bihar’s representatives propose some relaxation in age rules, highlighting the importance of utilizing the rich experience of older members.
In Tamil Nadu, the appointment of M. Veerapandiya as the new state secretary, replacing R. Mutharasan, is a testament to the strict application of the age limit. As for Bihar, the current state secretary, Ram Naresh Pandey, was given an exemption, showcasing the division of opinions on this issue.
The Congress discussions also covered draft political resolutions and organizational reviews, which will continue until the new leadership is elected on Thursday. Members will elect a new National Council, Executive Committee, Secretariat members, and the General Secretary during this key event.
If D. Raj steps down, who will take his place? Currently, Amardeep Kaur, serving as the General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), is a name that has surfaced in these discussions. However, at 73, there’s uncertainty about her stepping into the role. Some argue that giving Raj another term may be prudent considering the party’s 100th anniversary next year, which may warrant continuity rather than abrupt changes.
The question of whether to strictly implement the age limit remains pivotal. During a recent press conference, P. Santhosh Kumar, a member of the National Executive Committee, stated that the party Congress will unanimously choose a new General Secretary. A total of 712 representatives from 24 states and 3 Union Territories are participating in the Congress discussions.
At the same time, group discussions among Kerala representatives highlighted differing opinions on the age limit. Some believe it’s essential to incorporate the energy of youth while still utilizing the experience of older members. E.S. Bijimol suggested that a harmonious mix of both could yield better results.
In Uttar Pradesh, the party unit strongly feels that D. Raj should continue as the General Secretary. State Secretary Aravind Raj remarked that having a Dalit leader in this position is an honor, and also highlighted Raj’s notable presence in national politics.
