Passengers beware: Important announcement at rail stations!

Important Notice for Passengers: Arrive Early at Railway Stations for Diwali in Tamil Nadu

As Diwali approaches, a significant rise in passenger traffic is expected at railway stations in Tamil Nadu. The railway authorities are advising travelers to arrive at the stations well in advance. This recommendation comes due to enhanced security checks being put in place during this festive period.

Increased Security Measures

In light of safety concerns, especially after some reports of explosives being smuggled onto trains, over 850 railway police officers have been stationed at key railway hubs such as Chennai Central, Egmore, and Tambaram. These officers will be monitoring the stations closely, ensuring that passengers follow security protocols. The officers also stressed that luggage would undergo thorough inspections, which may take additional time. Hence, arriving early is highly recommended.

Special Train Services for Diwali

To cater to the influx of travelers during this festive season, numerous special trains have been announced. The railways have planned extra services to facilitate smoother travel from Chennai to various destinations across Tamil Nadu. With Diwali falling on a Monday, many people will enjoy an extended holiday from October 18 to 21, allowing them to travel back home to celebrate with their families.

Heavy Passenger Traffic Expected

It is estimated that around 10 lakh (1 million) people will be traveling from Chennai to their hometowns for Diwali celebrations via buses, trains, and personal vehicles. During Thursday and Friday alone, six lakh (600,000) passengers have already traveled, and the numbers are expected to soar over the next few days. The Transport Department and railway officials report that around 2.75 lakh (275,000) passengers have booked state transport buses in the upcoming two days.

Extended Holiday Announcement

In addition to the travel rush, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday for government offices and educational institutions on Tuesday, October 21. This means that residents will have a four-day break from work. Consequently, government employees will enjoy a lengthy vacation from October 18 to 21, making it a perfect time for families to get together for the festivities.

Recommendations for Travelers

To avoid the last-minute rush and ensure a smooth journey, passengers are advised to keep the following points in mind:

  1. Plan Ahead: Try to book tickets in advance, whether for trains or buses. Many special trains are running, and the demand is high.

  2. Arrive Early: Given the thorough security checks, arriving at the station at least 2-3 hours before your train departure is advisable.

  3. Stay Informed: Keep track of announcements at the station regarding your train status and platform changes. This will help in avoiding confusion and delays.

  4. Secure Your Belongings: Ensure that your luggage has proper tags and is closely monitored during your travel.

  5. Travel Light: If possible, carry only what you need for the journey. Heavy luggage can slow down the security process.

Conclusion

This Diwali season, the railway authorities are taking extra precautions to ensure the safety and convenience of travelers. By planning ahead and adhering to safety measures, you can enjoy a hassle-free journey back to your hometown. Wishing you all a joyful and safe Diwali!
