Cheques, ATMs, and UPI: Navigating the Modern Banking Maze
As I read the news that starting from Saturday, we wouldn’t have to wait days to cash our cheques anymore, I couldn’t help but reminisce about the old cheque days. Back then, it took two whole days just to receive money once you handed in a cheque. Can you imagine that? The sheer thought of someone handing a cheque seems like an ancient relic today. You had to go to the bank, fill out a form, and place it in a box. These days, who even bothers to visit the branch?
Not too long ago, banks introduced a cheque truncation system that allows you to deposit an image of your cheque instead of handing over the physical one. While this system seems like a step forward, it reminds me of how complicated banking has become. A friend of mine recently snapped a photo of a ₹25,000 cheque and sent it to the bank manager via WhatsApp. I often wonder if that money even made it into the account.
The Weight of Cheques: A Burden or a Blessing?
Who can forget the infamous “bouncing cheque,” a term that strikes fear into the hearts of many? The phrase actualizes all kinds of negative thoughts in people’s minds. Imagine getting a cheque back simply because there wasn’t enough money in your account. It’s not just embarrassing; it can also lead to jail time and hefty fines. In society, a bounced cheque has the power to tarnish one’s reputation, something that many would rather avoid.
Today, a cheque book occupies a space like that of old letters and postcards. Although the times have changed, the anxiety surrounding cheques hasn’t completely vanished. We just call it something else now. What was once termed a “bounced cheque” is now referred to as a “transaction failure.” The words may have changed, but the feelings remain the same.
The Shift in Banking Norms
In the 1980s and 90s, having a cheque book was a symbol of pride for the middle class. Films would portray heroes triumphantly handing over cheques to villains, sending out a message that money comes with power. Today, our banking interactions may now occur at lightning speed, but the feelings of fear and humiliation surrounding payment failures linger on.
Gone are the days of writing cheques for school fees, insurance premiums, and rent. If your cheque bounced, it would take days for you to hear about it, and you’d cringe at the thought of your friends knowing you faced such an issue. Back then, it felt like a heavy weight on your shoulders. Fast forward to the present, and with the arrival of UPI, ATMs, and digital banking, we’ve seemingly transitioned into a new era—but have we really?
ATM Experiences: The New Challenges
With ATMs becoming commonplace, we thought our banking woes would lessen. Instead, the pressure increased. Standing in line at an ATM, feeling the eyes of strangers on you as you swipe your card and wait for it to process your withdrawal is a unique form of modern humiliation. You might hear phrases like “Transaction Failed” flashing across the screen. The whispers and stares of people waiting behind you can feel unbearable.
No one knows if it’s because your account is empty or if the server is down. All they see is a person struggling to access their own money. The dreaded “Out of Service” signs on ATMs taunt us, making the entire experience feel like a bad joke.
Digital Banking: A Double-Edged Sword
Just when we thought we’d left the hassles of cheque payments behind, digital banking introduced a new set of frustrations. Even simple transactions may result in failure, often leaving you questioning your account balance in a state of panic. “Transaction Failed,” the screen says casually, as if it were just a minor inconvenience. The humiliation never seems to end.
On the bright side, banking technology has come a long way—from UPI payments to instant transactions via mobile apps. But while these systems are exhilarating, they haven’t erased the problems that once plagued us when dealing with cheques. After all, humiliation still exists in various forms.
The Future Awaits
So, will we ever find relief from these modern-day banking burdens? Hopefully, as AI and advanced technologies develop, it might become easier. Imagine filling your tank at a petrol station, and instead of fumbling with cash or cards, you simply say, “Charge ₹500 to my account.” Your transaction would happen instantly, and you wouldn’t have to worry about a failed transaction or a bounced cheque.
For now, though, we continue to navigate this complicated world of finances, carrying the weight of embarrassment and fear of failed payments. The tools may have changed, but the feelings remain as stubborn as ever.
