There are certain words in English that are just “osum”. The word awesome can mean anything depending on the context and who speaks it.
For example , A and B go for a particularly difficult exam. When A sees the questions she finds she knows the answers and exclaims “awesome”. While B is distraught, he can’t understand the questions. He too exclaims “awesome”. Only in his case his tone and expression are a bit morose.
Of course a lot of you may argue that awesome is only used in positive sense, but technically that’s not true. Anything that inspires awe is awesome.
Awesome could mean awful as well 🙂 but not the other way around.
However in its current usage it has evolved, over a period of many centuries, and has a more positive connotation.
An awesome sight could be a picture post card like sunset and also a landslide that has just struck washing away the highway.
Of course there are a few more words that behave similarly, but I particularly like the awesomeness of awesome!
